Siam Country Club, Old Course

Siam Country Club, Old Course – Historic Championship Golf Near Pattaya

Siam Country Club Old Course is one of Thailand’s most famous golf courses with a rich history dating back to 1970. Originally designed by Japanese architect Ichisuke Izumi, it was the country’s second golf course and featured heavily contoured greens, large trees, and subtle bunkering that gave it a classic feel.

Between 2006 and 2007, the Old Course underwent a complete renovation by American designers Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley. The original routing was largely preserved, but the course was modernized to championship standards with curved fairways, new water hazards, large high-lipped bunkers, and relocated greens featuring the legendary undulating Siam putting surfaces.

Since its reopening, the course has hosted major international tournaments, including the US LPGA Honda Classic starting in 2010. In 2018, it was ranked as the 73rd best golf course in the world by Golf Digest USA. Set in gently rolling low hills just outside Pattaya, the 7,162-yard, par-72 Old Course boasts abundant mature trees, shrubs, and flowering plants, creating an arboretum-like atmosphere enhanced by sculpted bushes and hedges unique to Siam Country Club.

The out-and-back layout features lakes and strategic creeks requiring long, straight drives to avoid large bunkers. Fairways are lined with trees that punish errant shots, while the large greens are fast, undulating, and well-maintained, making experienced caddies invaluable for reading tricky breaks.

A notable landmark is a large golden Buddha overlooking the course, visible from the uphill 9th hole. The finishing stretch of holes (15th to 18th), known as Siam’s “Amen Corner,” provides dramatic challenges that can override a good round if not played carefully. The par-5 18th hole is particularly demanding, tempting golfers to reach in two shots but punishing those who push their luck.

The clubhouse, dating from the 1970s with interior updates, overlooks the course and valley and has binoculars for viewing nearby farms and other golf courses. Siam Country Club Old Course remains one of the premier golf destinations in Asia and a must-play for serious golfers visiting Pattaya.
